Candidate Profile

Tom Rooney is the State Senator for the 27th District of Illinois. He previous served as Mayor of Rolling Meadows and on the City Council. He has taught economics and history at West Leyden High School for twenty years and served in the Marine Corps Reserve from 1986 to 1992. He and his wife, Sue, have four sons and reside in Rolling Meadows.

Campaign Status & Overview

Former Republican State Senator Matt Murphy resigned in September 2016 after nearly 10 years of service. With Murphy’s support, Tom was appointed to serve the District with the wish that state government be run more like local governments. Since then, he has led by example, instilling accountability, transparency, and discipline in state government. The 27th District is considered a Tier 1 race, the top target in the State Senate for both parties and a major battleground in November.

The 27th District covers all or parts of Arlington Heights, Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Inverness, Palatine, Wheeling, Prospect Heights and South Barrington. Townships include Barrington, Elk Grove, Palatine, Maine & Wheeling.

Paid Internship Description

Interns will help with every aspect of the campaign, ranging from executing phone banks, organizing precinct walks, attending political events with the candidate, and providing campaign operational support. Interns will have the opportunity to meet and collaborate with influencers, local officials, and campaign staff throughout the duration of their internship. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience working on one of the biggest races in Illinois in 2018.

Interns will be paid $10-$12/hour depending on their time commitment and experience. Flexible hours are available. Paid internships are available July–November. No experience is required.
